Adhesive backing FEP Teflon film

Hi all and again thanks to Ahmet ( from the Yahoo group )for sending a sample to me.
I have tested extensively the Adhesive backing FEP Teflon and am abandoning that
route for now. It seems to have the same problem as straight
polycarbonate/nylon/Polyethylene. It is difficult to separate the resin ( at
least mine )without it actually coming off the glass base. You could be using a
different resin with different results, but for my purposes it does not work.

New VAT + DuPont Teflon FEP Film

Time to marry these two together.
For now I'm just folding the film in place.


I used some clips and an old ruler to cut two pieces 95mm in length:


and stretched the Teflon Film on top of the glass. It kind of clings to the glass by itself.
Just secured it on two opposite sides:

New all glass VAT

That time of the year for a new VAT again.
After some calculations a few posts back I realized I will have to add resin midway if I print a larger object, hence the current post and need for a bigger VAT.
If you need to print a smaller item, the VAT may prove too big, but you can always drop a block of 70mm x 90mm x 10mm glass and use less resin.
This time it is all glass with a bit of 100% silicone.
BOM:
1- 200mm x 150mm 5mm soda lime glass ( regular window ).
2- 200mm x 20mm x5mm of the above.
2-100mm x 20mm x5mm  of the above above.


Mark the location of the walls lightly with permanent marker.
Spread some silicone on the bottom edge and the side edges and repeat on all 4 sides.

Use some tape to hold the glass in place after you glue it. Leave it undisturbed at least overnight.
I slid out the glass window, but left the aluminum rails and inserted the new VAT and tightened the grub screws.



Perfect fit!

Itching to publish!

Here it is! The VAT Tilt test X-axis. Did only a few layers, but watch the VAT tilting:

VAT-Tilt connection

It is one of the least, but not last thing left to do. The VAT to Tilt to X axis connection.
This is going to be long. Time me if you want. Start:
 Mark 7mm from each side  ( you can pick another number as long as it is a sacred one ).
Drill with M4 bit and a vacuum cleaner at this point to avoid getting chips in unwanted places and shortening something.

Assembled an L shape bracket with a bolt like so:


 Cut 2 x M4 threaded rod pieces in 125mm lengths:

Assemble the rods and L shape into:

Bend the rods to be perpendicular to the Meccano piece:


Now attach the Meccano piece with some M5 Inbus:

I had to recenter my X- axis to be in the center of the rods.


Finally bolt together, tighten and adjust with top lock nuts.


Stop!
Phew! That was a fast one. Took me longer to stop and take photos, than to actually assemble.

VAT-Frame correction

I have missed something during the VAT-Frame build. Someones sharp eye pointed it out.
Between the U shape profile VAT base and the L shape sides of the VAT frame there are small screws that protrude.



It is a set screw with a M4 collar. It is used to set the VAT to be parallel and at a specific start distance from the build base.
This is what it looks like only smaller:

The inside diameter is M4, but the screw itself is M2.5 thread. The bolt is 30mm x M2.5

The title said Final, but... Silicone VAT

It never is final - Everything.
OK this post is the culmination of previous posts.

Once I have the Silicone walls and a coated Glass it is time to spread some silicone on the bottom of the walls and stick them together.

That's it! nothing more fancy. Just place another glass on top until dry and seal the gaps in the corners.

Silicone Time Capsule

Two weeks ago I took a 5mm soda-lime glass piece and spread some aquarium 100% silicone sealant on it.

BOM:

2 pieces - 5mm 150mmx150mm ordinary glass

2 pieces - 10mm 110mmx70mm ordinary glass

2 clamps

1 tube of 100% Aquarium silicone.

1 piece of heat shrink  wrap large enough to cover 150mmx150mm and have a margin of about 3cm on all sides.


Spread silicone and cover with shrink wrap place the other 150mmx150mm glass on top and use the 10mm to spread the load and clamp.

Leave untouched for 2 weeks.

Today - Carefully removed the 10mm glass and clamps. Clamped on one of the 10mm pieces for a few hours to make sure silicone has cured - only to check.



Guess not. But a few hours later I managed to peel off the shrink wrap from the silicone and left it to set.

Some things take time, so prepare and experiment early on to be able to have something useful at the right time.

More Silicone Vat tests

Hey All,

I had another round of the testing bug last night. I decided to play with a 5mm thick soda-lime glass base and a silicone coated microscope slide.

The results are a shapeless blob, that began as a heart from Dymax 9663 test VAT.  I stuck a screw in the resin and put it on top of the heart and placed it in the light. It embedded the nail in the heart.  Placed a few drops of the resin on the silicone coated slide and:




moved the heart ( blob ) up and down in 5 sec intervals.

I moved the resin around and it because of the resinophobic (new word in the dictionary - NOT! 8 google results - bummer!) nature of the silicone, the resin forms a round drop again.





I saw no ill effects from the resin, from the heat of polymerization and from cleaning with a paper towel and Isopropyl alcohol. The two defects on the silicone are my doing while trying to separate the nylon from the slide too early before the silicone is fully cured (which took 2-3 days @ room 22 degrees C ). The blue light caustics in the middle picture are from the Dell Shutdown screen of the projector.

Final VAT Tilt ( I promise...maybe ).

As the title states I cannot promise, that I will not revisit this subject again and end up revising it.

I had made some test assembly until I was certain that it will fit and my measurements are correct.

From what you can see - Yes, there is only 5mm of travel. :-(

VAT 100% silicone dam wall

Time to setup another test. I am trying to create a dam wall for the silicone coated VAT, that I have not yet built. I will have details on the experiment with glass and different foil in an attempt to create a thin coating of silicone on the VAT glass.

I have found an aluminum I-beam with unequal sides. One side is 7mm high and the other is 5mm. Width is 17mm. I filled the channel with silicone and let it dry for 3-4 days outside (still relatively warm here - 24C during the day). It solidified and used an exacto knife to separate the sides and lift the silicone.


I used a business card to smooth the silicone while still wet. Put it in the pipe from the lens assembly spacer post to keep it from dust.

VAT Frame cont.

This, I hope to be a fairly good VAT frame idea, otherwise it is back to the bathroom... LOL

BOM:

7.5mm x 1mm  - "U"-shape aluminum extrusion -  1 meter long

15.3mm x 27mm x 1.5mm - "L"-shape aluminum extrusion - 1 meter long

15.3mm x 27mm x 1.5mm - "U"-shape aluminum extrusion - 1 meter long

21.5mm x 25.4mm glass shelf holder - look for one with inside measurements (8.2mm) for 8mm glass - 4 pcs

Assorted springs for your flying-spring-eye-poking pleasure in multiples of 4.




The 7.5mm x 1mm U-shape extrusion has an inside measurement of around 6mm - perfect for my Borosilicate glass VAT floor of 5.5mm. The glass holders have hex grub screws that will hold the 7.5 profile with the glass.

First Stab at VAT Holder and Tilt

This was a productive weekend. I was struck by a fantastic idea while in the bathroom. Yes! In the bathroom I get the best ones. LOL

Took a screwdriver and headed in. My 1/2 was scared what was going to happen. HACKING! -of course, what else!

Later after a test fit I repaired the damage done and all is well with the fixtures.
